They fly upside down, backwards, swoop, fight, float, hover and each has it’s own particular personality and I have fallen in love with these tiny iridescent birds. They flap their wings about 80 times per second which makes a kind of hum and from there you get it’s name. During courtship they will flap their wings around 200 times per second. Taking photos of them is really difficult as they move so quickly. Such a tiny bird but they need to eat a lot as their breathing rate and heartbeat and high body temperature requires it. Hummingbirds are very territorial and have been observed chasing each other and even larger birds such as hawks away from their territories. Their tongues are a long as their beaks which helps them to steal nectar from the flowers. There are many varities of humming birds and all have long beaks. Some beaks are in a perfect curve. The sword billed humming bird’s beak is as long as it’s body. Some have long tail like the long tailed sylph and some have little booties on the end of their tail called racket tail.
