Kyrgzstan

The custom of kidnapped brides is still happening in some parts of Kyrgyzstan. Families decide that their son should marry a girl from another village. She is invited for tea by the sister (her future sister in law) or a mutual friend and kidnapped. If she stays more than three days her parents will disown her so the rush is on for the family to rescue her. Some young couples plan the kidnapping so that they can marry their chosen one but in some cases the poor girls have no choice and are kept locked up and in hiding until the three days have passed and they have no option but to stay.
