Carnival Salvador de Bahia

Salvador de Bahia is the very last place that slaves were bought and sold and consequently it is very African in its’ people, music and culture. People were shipped from Nigeria, Angola and Benin to here and Capoeira, which was a dance invented by the slaves in chains, started here. The dance uses mainly feet movements (due to the chains) and is a martial art where one kick can chop off your head. It is also closely aligned to the religion of Candomble.
The Candomble religion is very strong (trances, high priests, black ladies with billowing white dresses and I suspect even slaughter of animals at times) and came over from Africa.Pelhourinho is the historic centre of Salvador de Bahia and is where the slave market used to be. Slaves from Salvador were sent throughout South America and Salvador was the principle arrival port for the slaves from Africa.
