Hope House Orphanage Nairobi

Ros runs a Baby Orphanage in Nairobi and has a fabulous system of “adopting a Cot”. As she tries to have the babies adopted there is no point in you supporting a baby so she set up a system that you adopt a cot and she writes to you telling you who is in the cot, how the baby was found, all the baby’s details, weight when brought to her, approximate age and then every three months you get an update on your cot and who is in it. The babies were so beautiful and happy. It was clear that the staff loved the babies and the orphanage welcomed visitors which in turn encouraged support and adoption. They had a good success rate but lived very precariously on donations. They had had to move everything very recently with only a few days notice due to the property being sold from under them so the aim is now to build an orphanage. They have had some hard times where they could not even pay the staff and almost got shut down due to lack of funding. Every penny counts at this place but there is no lack of love or commitment. I met a lovely Columbian Lady whose husband was Welsh and she had just decided to adopt my favourite baby boy. When she told me her decision I was in tears as it meant that this baby had a chance in life. It appears to be easier to adopt a girl than a boy because single Kenyans can adopt a girl but not a boy. A great many of the adoptive parents are local Kenyans.
