Nothing can prepare you for the beauty of this glacier. It’s blue-white colours surrounded by the deep blue of Lake Argentina. Every so often there is a carsh as you hear part of the glacier breaking off and into the water. Tour boats go as close as they can but never too close in case they get hit by the shards of the breaking ice. I took a trekking tour on the ice instead of the boat trip and loved being so close to the ice crevices and tunnels. Lake Viedma is another beautiful lake in this area which is in Patagonia and near the Torres de Paine National Park. El Calefate is a small town and most visitors are trekkers who have been or are about to go trekking. There are many tour companies offer tours to the mountains, lakes and glaciers surrounding El Calefate.
