North Argentina Salta, Cafayate and Ju Juy

Salta is quite a modern pleasant city but with very elegant Colonial buildings and has a cowboy feel about it as it caters to the local Gauchos and landowners. It has a nice town square and a stunning Cathedral. There is a cable car to Cerro San Bernardo for some magnificent views. It is famous for the discovery of the Llullaillaco Children, three mummified and perfectly-preserved Inca children discovered at Llullaillaco Volcano in 1999. It is believed that the children were sacrificed in a fertility ceremony or as an offering to the Incan gods. To preserve them only one is on display at any one time. I saw Juanita. Her skin looked perfect, very blackened and it was quite eerie.

Ju Juy is a very different city. There are many indigenous people in this city and the city has a feel of Bolivia rather than Argentina. It does not have many modern buildings and the streets are small and narrow and many of them are cobbled. Houses are small adobe style. Ju Juy is surrounded by the most magnificent scenery imaginable. Purmacurca, the hill of the seven colours, is nearby, Quedabra of Humahuaca is close by and there are many hiking trails to be done from Ju Juy.

Quebrada de Cafayate in the Valles Calchaquíes is in the province of Salta, Argentina. The dusty town of Cafayate has a laid-back rhythm, picturesque colonial style buildings and wine cellars open to the public. Cafayate is famous for its torrontés, a grape producing aromatic dry and sweet white wines. It’s spectacularly scenic, with the green of the vines backed by rising mountains behind.
