Ollantaytambo

Ollantaytambo is one of my favourite villages in the Sacred Valley. It is an old Inca site and the walls and the streets of the village are Inca. Many people come here from outlying villages and so it is very normal for people to be wearing the red Ponchos and hats of the Quechua people. Ollantaytambo is surrounded by the Andes and is in a valley. It has three large Inca sites on it’s hillsides and a great deal of Inca terracing. The festival I saw was one of casting out the devils and along with the solemn procession carrying the Statue of Christ was a procession of people in devil masks wearing very colourful clothing singing and dancing along the cobbled streets. The fiesta went on most of the night and the devils got cruder and cruder with their dancing actions.
I found a wonderful Cafe called Hearts Cafe in Ollantaytambo where a 72 year old lady has started a Charity and all the profits of the Cafe go to the children in the Sacred Valley. She has started schools in the area and works with Mothers and children on a self help basis. She only gives help if she sees the people make some effort themselves to try and improve their lot.
