Cachoeira: This riverside town was once an important port where they shipped sugar and tobacco downriver. It’s main sight is the church of Ordem Terceiro do Carmo a baroque church. It is a sleepy town full of colourful preserved buildings. It is joined by a British built bridge to the town of Sao  Felix. Cachoeira, which means waterfall, is a renowned centre of Candomble.

Olinda and Recife are only seven miles apart and are entirely different cities. Olinda is a very African city where it’s inhabitants worship the Candomble religion whereas Recife is a modern city. Olinda is well known for its fabulous carnivals. Its origins come from the sugar cane industry and it has a fine historic centre with over 20 Baroque churches, numerous chapels and its convents. It’s twisting streets with Colonial houses, shady trees and restaurants and cafes are a remarkable contrast to nearby Recife which is a modern city.
