Jericoacoara

I found an amazing windsurfing area in the north of Brazil called Jericoacoara where the streets were of sand (horrible for lugging suitcases). It was a tiny village with enormous desert like sand dunes which you climbed to watch the stunning sunsets. My plan had been to windsurf there but, due to a month of serious food poisoning, I was too weak to get the sail up so instead I spent a lovely time recovering and reading books while lounging on a hammock. Christmas was spent in a wonderful place called Jericoacoara which I totally recommend to you for Windsurfing, Kitesurfing and Surfing. It is a cool community, unspoiled as yet with great restaurants and I stayed in a wonderful pousada run by Belgians. They invited me to a Christmas eve party which was great.
Miles and miles of glorious sand dunes empty of people except at sunset when everyone climbs the Sunset dune to enjoy the setting of the sun. The restless children use their surf boards to sand board down the dune while parents sledge down with their children shrieking in glee. Others sit far away and silently meditate as they watch the sun go down. This colourful fishing village flies theĀ vibrant sails of the wind surfers and kite surfers along side fishing nets and bemused fishermen who ten years ago lived in relative solitude. The many pousadas and restaurants have been built with quality and ecology in mind and the sand streets do not allow for heavy traffic and instead bicycles, horses and sand buggys are the mode of transport.
