Forbidden City

The Forbidden City is a walled city and was the Chinese imperial palace from the Ming Dynasty to the end of the Qing dynasty—the years 1420 to 1912. It is a Unesco world heritage site.  It got its more common name because no-one could enter or leave the city without the emperor’s permission. With the abdication of Puyi the city was no longer used as a palace and is now a museum. The city is enormous and can take almost the whole day to get round. One entrance is in Tiananmen Square where you have to go under the large statue of Chairman Mao to get into the city. The glazed tiles and the decoration of the palace especially the roofs are beautiful but also very austere.
